The Jewish holiday Hanukkah is otherwise known as Festival of lights which is celebrated for eight consecutive days. Hanukkah is specially celebrated to commemorate the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem to the service of God. A legend that holds special importance in the celebration of Hanukkah is that when the Temple Menorah (the seven branched Candelabrum) was sought to be lighted, it was found that the single cruse of olive oil that somehow escaped the contamination by the Greeks miraculously stayed lighted up for eight days from a single day supply. In honour of this miracle, Hanukkah is still celebrated with great joy and gaiety. The custom further includes eating of latkes – potato pancakes, sufganiot – doughnuts and playing with dreidel. Dreidel refers to the spinning top on which four Hebrew letters are inscribed which are gimmel, nun, hei and sheen which means ‘a great miracle happened there’. Finally, the custom also includes gifting money to children.

So both the word when joined together becomes ‘Shabbat Shalom’ which means ‘may the day of no work be peaceful’.

Hanukkah, is a eight day celebration, meaning dedication. The day refers to festival of lights which is celebrated to commemorate the dedication of Temples that were recovered by the Jewish Forces called Yehuda Meccabee. Till today this Jewish holiday is observed by lighting an oil lamp for eight days. The feast, as described earlier, are the seasons set by God himself. So next in the list is the month Eluh which is said to be the judgment month. Here each person’s bad deeds are weighed against that of good ones and then they are listed in the Book of Life accordingly. Next follows Rosh Hashanah, which falls in the first or second day of Jewish Calender Tishri. In this Jewish holiday, people turn to God and announce something special to happen. Honey forms the special item on the dish this day signifying the sweetness of the New Year. Jewish believe that the Messiah himself became the offering for sin. So if we admit our sin and have deep faith on Lord, then our names can be inscribed in the Book of Life. Jewish Holidays includes ten days of repentance that start from Rosh Hashanah and ends at Yom Kippur. The days in between are observed as the days of repentance where people ask for forgiveness to the one to whom they have wronged. The last day of Jewish Holiday is the Yom Kippur. The day is celebrated basically from sunset to nightfall. It is done to afflict the soul and make it free from past sins. This day, people mend everything correct between them and those whom they had wronged in the past.

Jewish Christians are also known as Judeo-Christians and they were the people who were part of the Jewish reform movement which later on became the movement of Christianity. On the Mount Sinai, God gave the dates of the Jewish feasts to Moses. The calendar of the Jews is based on the phases of moon. Each month in the lunar calendar starts with the new moon. The Jewish feast Pesach or Passover falls on the first full moon of spring. Pesach, Unleavened bread or Chag Hamotzi and First Fruit (Yom habikkurim) falls between March and April. The fourth one Shavuot or Pentecost falls in summer during the late days of May or early days of June. Trumpets, Yom Kippur and Sukkot, the other three feasts of Jewish falls between September to October. 

The Jewish feast Passover is the fest of salvation. It is also called feast of freedom because it is celebrated to commemorate the exodus of the Israelites from the slavery of Egypt and how the faithful people were protected by the blood of the lamb. The second feast unleavened bread is observed by the Jews by eating unleavened bread for seven days. This symbolizes the holy walk with the Lord. The period of Shavuot is the period of transition of the Jews from getting freed from slavery in Egypt to the receiving of their holy book the Torah at Mount Siani. This is the time when Yesua dies till the resurrection of Yeshua. Rosh Hashanah is another Jewish feast that falls in autumn and on the first and second days of Tishri, the Jewish Calendar and is observed in September or October. This feast is also called Yom ha Din or the Judgment Day.

• What is Hanukah Festival?

There are many Jewish Holidays and Hanukah is one of them. In the Jewish temple, Antiochus statue was put up and the Jewish people were ordered to bow before the statue. However, there were 1-0 commandants who prohibit people to worship idol or statue. A small group of people known as Maccabees revolted and soon after three long year war, Maccabees summoned up Jerusalem from the Syrians. But in between, the temple was brutally destroyed.

However, the Jewish cleaned and repaired the temple and rededicated the God. Since then, they light the lamp called Menorah, which was a symbol of the God being there. A small jar of oil was however, enough for a day, but the miraculous lamp stayed alight for about 8 days. Since then, Hanukkah Jewish Holiday has become an important occasion of the Jewish People.

You can make chips of different things as per your interest. People generally prefer chocolate covered raisins as it caters to two purposes, as a treat and as a game piece.
